Ozy Illustrates
I'm drowning in an ocean of creative ideas!
Starving Artist: A self portrait
The Starving Artist is a self portrait I made using acrylic paint, acrylic spray paints, Posca markers, charcoal and graphite. I also used alcohol spray to create the effects in the background. I wanted to leave specific assets in color and in slightly different styles, while leaving the face and hand in black and white I also wanted to “dirty” my face up for the portrait (which I did using charcoal as well as enhanced digitally) to help show the “starving artist” image - basically, try to make myself look even more like a bum than I already look 😂
Posca Demo
This rough portrait foursome I made using four different color sets of Posca paint markers to showcase the different colors and bendability of the markers to prospective customers at my store. I also used metallic watercolors for the backgrounds. The fish design is one I came up with for my Portrait Playing Cards series, below.
Overbite
This mixed media animal portrait was made using paper clay, polymer clay, toilet paper, modge podge, acrylic paint and pastels. The reason/story behind the name is, while I was making the armature using wire for the top jaw, aluminum foil and packaging tape, everything lined up where the jaws would meet naturally. However, once I began using the paper clay (a new medium for me and is different slightly than air dry clay) things...began to .... not align anymore lol. But by the time I noticed this, the clay was dry and, yea, it was beyond the point of no return. So, I changed the name from Bruce (which is the name of the first animatronic for the movie Jaws) to Overbite because he's got an overbite now lol.
Below are some of the process images I took as I made everything. Sadly I didn't make the jaws first, THEN attach it to the canvas. *face palm*. I attached the armature jaws FIRST to the canvas, which I had already added small waves going in the wrong direction *face palm* from where the jaws, then proceeded from there. Yea, wont be doing that again!
To help show that the top jaw does not fully attach to the canvas.
Some of the finished teeth.
The bottom teeth are attached.
Top teeth are attached as well as some of the defining 3D elements on the bones.
Beginning to sand and add the soft pastels.
Finished soft pastels around teeth and all over the rest of the bones.
Adding the toilet paper waves to help show that the skull bones are rising out of the water.
Painting over the waves and adding more depth (hopefully).
Adding white to the waves. (sorry for the bad lighting)
Below are the images of the portrait on display at my store, showcasing the majority of the materials I used to make it. So far people have enjoyed it!
Alan Cumming
This portrait of Alan Cumming I made using tempera paint sticks by Kwik Stix, who nicely showcased me on their Instagram page after being sent an image of my portrait on display at my shop.
Here are the sets that I used, along with some acrylic white paint, and a pallet knife.
Here is a quick process video of how I made this nifty portrait.
Gene Wilder
I wanted to test out Crayola's Slick Stix, which are just a softened crayon, so I made a small portrait of the legendary Gene Wilder.
English Champions
I made this poster as a way to, one, show support for teachers and the reality that surrounds them and, two, as a way to engage people to become interested in teachers. My original idea had been to make a different poster per general subject taught in schools, but I haven't decided if I'm going to continue on with that idea or not.
I made this using graphite, charcoal (black and white), and pastels for the subject title.
Holiday Pets
These two animal portraits were for an Xmas gift. I made BatCat using acrylic pouring techniques, acrylic paint, pastels and Posca paint markers. The wings I made out of wire and tissue paper layers with modge podge. I also highlighted key parts - the eyes, moon, stars, parts of the clouds and wings, with glow in the dark paint also.
For Frosty I kept it more abstract aside from the portrait itself. I used acrylic paint, Posca paint markers, pastel pencils and texture medium to get a soft fur like texture.
BatCat
Me making a mess.
Tuvalu
Tuvalu. Made on an acrylic pour painted background, modeling/texture paste, polymer clay, pastel pencils, acrylic paint and Posca paint markers on a 6X6 canvas.
Aquaman
Made using toilet paper, modge podge, acrylic paint and posca markers.
This is after laying on a layer of gloss varnish and more white to the wave caps. It's more white in the image than it is in person because of my bad lighting.
A Tennis Match
A few quick storyboard panels of a random story idea based off of two animal erasers (a turtle with a baby turtle on its back and a pink whale) randomly chosen and the theme of a tennis rally.
Santa Momoa
Portrait of Jason Moma (@prideofgypsies ) out of watersoluble graphite wearing a Santa hat. Also with a mini portrait of @giorgio.volver on my business card in the lower left corner.
Same Boat
Made on an acrylic pour 6X6 canvas using acrylic paint, Posca markers, texture paste and Modge Podge dimensional fluid.
Neebs Gaming Fanart
Illustrations I made based off of different game the YouTubers Neebs Gaming play. The last is also in tribute of one of the players, Thick44, who recently passed away. I made each using Clip Studio Paint.
Mini Bat Cat
A miniature mock up for a larger mixed media portrait of my cat. This was made using mixed media board and Posca paint markers.
Thumbbox 2023 submissions
These are the three portraits that I submitted for the 2023 Thumbbox art gallery event for the Ohio Art League.
Sail over the Sun. Made on an acrylic pour painted background, pastel pencils, Posca markers and Modge Podge dimensional fluid on a 6X6 canvas.
Tuvalu. Made on an acrylic pour painted background, modeling/texture paste, polymer clay, pastel pencils, acrylic paint and Posca paint markers on a 6X6 canvas.
Evaporation. Made on a 3.5X5 floor tile sample with acrylic ink and melted crayons.
